Easiest Trends Ever: Overalls

Overalls have been making a huge comeback for a couple years now — if you haven’t gotten on board yet, now’s your chance. Some of you may find it difficult to reinstate this 80s & 90s trend back into your wardrobe, but I’m here to help. Not only is this vintage fad insanely comfortable, it’s also practical and stylish — two outfit components we’re usually forced to choose between. Similar to the jumpsuit trend, overalls can be one of the fastest & easiest ensembles to throw together.

Although overalls are a relatively simple item, they can be a little tricky to execute correctly. One wrong turn and they can instantly transform you into a farmer, clown, or 5 year-old. It’s also imperative to find the right fit to ensure that they’re as flattering as possible. To achieve this, avoid pairing your overalls with flannel shirts, busy prints like polka dots, spaghetti strap tanks (just avoid those altogether please). Instead, opt for simple striped tops, chic blouses, and basic tees. Lastly, make sure to stay away from other statement pieces like trendy hats and tons of jewelry — this would be way too much, not to mention totally take away from your overalls.

Another issue with this trend is tracking down a cute pair. I’m usually a huge fan of thrift stores, but chances are, you won’t be able to find a pair at Goodwill that won’t swallow you up. Check out these more stylish, modern options — they’re even organized to fit your price point!

For a little outfit inspiration, check out the look I put together below. I centered this outfit around these J Brand “splurge” overalls, only because I’m partial to the darker wash. I paired them with a lightweight striped sweater, green anorak jacket if it’s a chillier day, and some brown wedges. Wearing heels — especially if your overalls have more of a boyfriend-fit — will help with the flattering factor. If your pair has a skinny fit or you have overall shorts, pretty much any shoe works. To accessorize, go for a simple satchel, minimal jewelry, and maybe some sunglasses with a vintage vibe to complement your overalls. I chose a faux leather crossbody bag, Michael Kors chain link watch, and Ray Ban Clubmaster glasses. Last but not least, I topped off this look with a red-orange nail lacquer for a fun, seasonally-appropriate pop of color.
